Dudley Zoo is a hidden gem for families. Not as well-publicised as many of the UK's other zoological attractions, it nevertheless boasts some fabulous animal attractions.

As zoos go, Dudley offers a good range of animal and bird life. From a bear to tigers and giraffe, there is something to interest everyone. What really sets it apart, however, is some of the habitats that have been especially created. The flamingos are one of the first sights at the Zoo entrance, housed in a wonderful pool area, which nestles naturally into the craggy rock side. Meanwhile the lemur enclosure, Lemur Wood, is stunning – allowing visitors to walk a pathway through the trees, with lemurs running, swinging and jumping from side to side.

Birds at Dudley Zoo

As well as colourful flamingos, the Zoo hosts a variety of different owl species, including Snowy Owls and Eagle Owls. Often hard to spot at first, the owls provide magnificent flying displays. The penguins are also a favourite for visitors, particularly at feeding times, details of which are available at the main entrance.

Younger children, in particular, will be delighted by the Zoo’s farm area, where a range of animals are available for petting. These include goats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hens. There is also a small children’s play area, complete with a pretend cow, which children can "milk"! A larger adventure play area and children’s fair also provide good opportunities for play.

Dudley Castle

Set at the heart of the Zoo, Dudley Castle dates from the 11th century and played host to the future Henry II and Elizabeth I. Held for the Royalists during the English Civil War, its defensive capabilities were slighted by the victorious Parliamentarians and the castle fell into decline. Its demise was sealed in 1750 when fire raged through the building. Today, the castle houses a heritage centre and offers a great picnic venue, as well as a space for a range of activities.

Practical Information for Visitors to Dudley Zoo

The Zoo is set on a steep hillside, although a free regular "land train" runs between the main entrance and the castle courtyard. This can get busy, but offers a good option for tired or small legs to journey to the top, from where visitors can make their own way back down. Parking is free and easy to access and admission prices are reasonable.

As with many places, refreshments are expensive and a picnic lunch is recommended. Toilet facilities are reasonably okay and baby changing facilities are available. A well-stocked gift shop is sited near the exit, which offers a range of differently priced items.

Overall, Dudley Zoo is a great family day out. It’s best to arrive early and there is enough to keep everyone occupied and interested all day – so much so, that sometimes the 5 p.m. closing time seems too early!
