Have a Merry Christmas party for the kids this year! Here are crafts, games and goodie bag ideas for a kid-friendly and fun fete!

Christmas time is a great time for having a party, be it for a child’s birthday or celebrating the holiday season. Here are some tips to have a jolly good time with the kids.

Greet the Kids With “Seasons Greetings” Mood Set

Put on cheery Christmas music and set out scented pinecone to give off the Christmas vibe. If a parent has an elf costume kicking around the house, put it on. Otherwise dig up the most Christmas-inspired outfit in the closet, be it a Santa sweater, Christmas light earrings or a combination of red, green, and white clothing. This sets a happy and light mood and may even get a smile out of the parents.

Decorations for the Christmas Party

Have all the Christmas gear out and on for the party. Set the Christmas tree up and turn the lights on, hang the wreath on the door, and place Christmas figurines on mantles and shelves. The party room itself can be decorated with streamers and balloons that are red, green and white or go for a more wintery feel with different shades of blue and white streamers. Another option is to use Christmas tree garlands as streamers around the room. Have Christmas decals on the windows and hang homemade paper snowflakes and/or ornaments from the ceiling on string or wire.

Little Hats for Little Elves aka Children

Welcome the little elves by giving them a Santa or elf hat instead of the traditional party hat. Simple Santa hats in red and sometimes green can be found at dollar stores and craft stores during the holiday season. To ensure kids don’t get their hats mixed up with the hats of other elves coming for the party, ask kids to make nametags to stick on their hats.

Kids Make Christmas Nametags

Have a nametag station set up at a table with nametag stickers and felts, crayons and pens to write their names and decorate the nametags. It’s also nice to have a selection of festive mini-sized stickers that they can put on their nametags. This is also a great activity to keep kids busy while waiting for everyone to show up at the party.

Christmas Arts and Crafts for the Party

There are a lot of simple and fun arts and crafts that kids can do at a Christmas party. Make Simple and Easy Christmas Ornaments with candy canes and pine cones. Another idea is to have kids decorate their goodie bags, which in this case could be “goodie stockings.” Get small plain Christmas stockings at a dollar store or from an arts and crafts shop. Also get some glitter glue, beads, felt shapes and buttons for kids to glue on to their stockings. Do this craft near the start of the party so the glue will have time to dry.

Christmas-Themed Games to Play

There are all sorts of great games to play with kids at Christmas. Some Fun Christmas-themed activities include Pin the Nose on Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Musical Chairs with Christmas Tunes and Pass the Present. Read Best Christmas Games for Kids for details on how to play these games.

Have Santa Come Visit the Party

If a family has a Santa costume or can find one to borrow, get a family member or friend to visit dressed as Santa. It’s also possible for a parent to find a party entertainer who will come in as Santa and be able to do other activities such as making kids balloon animals, telling jokes and doing magic tricks. Have Santa walk around to talk to each child and ask him what he wants for Christmas or give each child a chance to sit with Santa and have a picture taken. If Santa has enough time, get him to read a Christmas tale to the kids like the Night Before Christmas or Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus.

It might be a good to time to have Santa’s visit during snack time so that kids can eat while they are waiting for their turn to go sit with him.

Use Christmas Stockings as a Goodie Bag

Once bellies are full, games are played and Santa has gone, it’s time to say goodbye to the kids. Hand them their hand-decorated stockings filled with Xmas candy, fruit, their Christmas craft and a small toy or two.

Have a great Christmas party for the kids by decorating the home with Christmas decorations, doing homemade Christmas crafts, playing Christmas games and having Santa over for a visit.
