To make greener, eco-friendly Halloween costumes, items like boxes and packing materials around the house can be reused to create unique do-it-yourself costumes.

There are many different ways to go greener and celebrate a Green Halloween. This year do something good for the environment and reduce the need to buy a new Halloween costume by creating an eco-friendly unique costume from items around the house.

Halloween Costumes from a Box

A large cardboard box can be turned into many different Halloween costumes. Children will enjoy the chance to turn a box into a costume. Some costumes that can be created from a box:

  • A "Boo" Box – Write "Boo" on a box.
  • Gift box – Wrap a box in wrapping paper.
  • Cereal box – Decorate a box like a favorite cereal box.
  • Crayon box – Decorate a box like a box of crayons
  • Wine or Drink box – Decorate a box like a wine box or drink box.
  • Raisin box – Decorate a box like a box of raisins.
  • Kleenex Box – Decorate a box like a box of tissues.
  • Pizza box – Use a Pizza box for a costume.
  • Rubik Cube – Decorate a series of box to make them look like a Rubik cube.
  • Transformers – Decorate a series of box to create a Transformers costume.
  • Knight – Cut and decorate boxes with foil to create knight armor.

Halloween Costumes from Packing Supplies or Stuffing

Packing fillers like peanuts and bubble wrap and clear plastic bags can be reused and turned into unique Halloween costumes for little to no cost.

  • Snow globe – Put pieces of white peanuts or bean bag beans into a clear plastic bag. Shake when someone asks what you are.
  • Bag of Jelly Beans – Fill a clear plastic bag up with balloons.
  • Special Delivery Package – Wrap in bubble wrap or clear bag filled with peanuts. Add a "Special Delivery" label.
  • Handle with Care Package – Wrap in bubble wrap or clear bag filled with peanuts. Add a "Handle with Care" label.
  • Bubble Wrap Dress – Create a dress or suit out of bubble wrap, inspired by the 2007 season of Ugly Betty.

Halloween Costumes from Newspapers

Newspaper can be used as stuffing for costumes. It can also be turned into costumes on its own. Some ideas for newspaper costumes include:

  • A Newspaper – Put on clothes. Wrap in newspapers.
  • "Dirty Laundry" – Put on clothes. Wrap in rumpled, dirty newspapers.
  • A Newsprint dress – Use newspapers to fashion a dress. Find or design a pattern that can be made out of newsprint. Google for photos of newspaper dresses. Use duct tape to put seams together.

With a bit of imagination items that are readily at hand or would have been thrown out can be turned into unique, green Halloween costumes. Making Halloween costumes out of recycled materials is a good way to get everyone thinking about living greener and helping the environment.
