Halloween activities and games for school parties can be easy to plan and still be fun. Here are some easy tricks to treat the kids to a good time.

To make sure a Halloween class party is successful and fun, make sure all the supplies for games are assembled in advance. Have a schedule and stations (areas) to follow and prizes for everyone who participates. Plan for a separate station for treats as well.

School parties work best if one or two people are in charge and delegate responsibilities to parent volunteers. Depending on the number of children, it helps to break up into groups of 5 or 6 and move them from game station to game station with a set amount of time for each game. 5 to 10 minutes works well.

A punch card for each student, decorated with his or her name on it, can be used to keep track of activities as each child completes a game. The punch card can be made from a simple index card that is decorated as a craft project at the beginning of the party. Have each parent punch a hole at each station as the game is won or completed. At the end of the party, the child with the most punches gets to select a prize first, then others select until everyone has a prize.

Make sure to have an adult supervising each station, including snacks.

Spider Toss

Items needed:

  • Large bowl or bucket (can be decorated or black or orange)
  • Small beanbags.

For this game, regular beanbags can be called "spiders" or use decorated or purchased spiders beanbags.

Have each child toss beanbags into bowl to win from a specified distance. Most beanbags in per round wins. This can be repeated at a further distance to increase the number of throws and make the game more challenging.

Pumpkin Relay

Items needed:

  • Medium sized plastic pumpkins

Divide groups into teams of 5 or 6 and line them up.

Explain that the first person in each line passes the pumpkin back over his head to the next person in line who must then pass it through their legs to the next person in line. This pattern above the head and through the legs is repeated until the end of the line is reached.

Once the pumpkin gets to the end, the child at the end runs to the front of the line and starts over again. This continues until everyone has had a turn at the front of the line and the person who was first in line becomes the last . First team to have everyone compete first through last wins.

Pass the Pumpkin

Items needed:

  • Stuffed or plastic pumpkin, medium sized.
  • CD or MP3 player and speakers

This game is played similar to Hot Potato. Music is played, and then randomly turned off. The child left holding the pumpkin is eliminated. The last one holding the pumpkin at the end is the winner. Game can be repeated until everyone wins a prize.

Throw Me a Bone

Items needed:

  • Large piece of Cardboard (at least 36 inches by 36 inches), Black Marker
  • Package of small dog bones

Decorate cardboard by dividing into 9 squares using a Tic-Tac-Toe pattern

In each square, write a number between 1 and 9, but not in any order

Game is played by laying cardboard on the floor and having children stand 6 feet back, tossing 6 bones on to the board. They score points based on where the bones land in each square. Add up their total number of points, the person with the most points wins each round.

Measure a distance of 6 feet on the floor and mark with tape for children to stand behind to throw.

For added fun, keep the bones in a silly or spooky cup or bowl.

Additional Tips for Halloween Class Party Success

A well-planned classroom Halloween party does not have to be complicated. Keep things simple and moving to keep little ones entertained but not over-stimulated. For very small children, easier games might work better.

Be sure to have all the games, supplies and prizes set up and laid out in in advance and that all the adults know exactly what they will be assigned to do to make sure the party goes as smooth as possible.
