The holidays are a time to enjoy special family outings, make some great memories and start some family traditions. With Fall activities ending in Manitoba, and the Christmas season on its way, the City of Winnipeg and areas just outside the city offer a variety of interesting activities and events for kids to attend.
The Prairie Dog Central Railway Christmas Train Rides
The Prairie Dog offers kids the opportunity to ride an old-fashioned train, with Santa, and enjoy either an evening excursion with a stop to purchase hot dogs, snacks and enjoy a bonfire, or a morning breakfast ride that includes a stop for pancakes and sausages. A Red River Christmas Celebration at Lower Fort Garry
Lower Fort Garry National Historic site is hosting a Christmas celebration in December. Contact the site for specific information. Different areas within the Fort will be set up for Christmas, experiencing the different ways that those who live in the Big House and those who work at the Fort celebrate. Examples of activities will be caroling in the Men’s House, making decorations in the Big House, and sleigh rides weather permitting.
Father Christmas in the Forest at FortWhyte
FortWhyte Alive, located at 1961 McCreary Rd., offers the opportunity to share wishes with Father Christmas and to have Christmas pictures taken in a natural setting, on specific dates near the end of November or in December. The Manitoba Children’s Museum Breakfast with Santa and Santa’s Village
Opening for the Christmas season, usually in November, is Santa’s Village. This display used to be located in Eaton’s department store. Pictures with Santa also start around this time. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas Concert
Every year the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra offers a family holiday concert, at the Centennial Concert Hall. This year is The Snowman. A book made into a film set to music, is about a boy who makes a snowman that comes to life. The performance, and activities available prior to the concert, are a fun way to introduce musical possibilities to children. Nutcracker by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet
When kids are ready to sit through a performance, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet performing Nutcracker is a perfect time to introduce them to the ballet. Afternoon as well as evening performances are usually available. Canadian traditions mix with this traditional Russian Christmas ballet celebrating the holiday season. Winter Wonderland Presented by Canad Inns
Winter Wonderland, an outdoor evening light display, is located off of Portage Avenue and the Perimeter Hwy, next to the Assiniboia downs, in the Red River Exhibition Park. Drive through the display in a warm vehicle, enjoy an outdoor skating rink, or sleigh rides on weekends. The display usually runs from around the end of November to the start of January.
