Halloween Costume Ideas for SiblingsCreative Costume Pairs Perfect for Kids of All Ages
For Halloween costumes that stand out from the rest, dress children as characters that go together in surprisingly creative ways.
If children are young enough and enjoy doing things together, they may want to dress in coordinating Halloween costumes. This article presents creative group costume ideas that also work separately when children are not together. Each idea works equally well for boys and girls and for siblings of all ages. Every costume is easily made following directions found on the Internet or readily available purchased from catalogs. Find the idea that matches your children’s personalities. The Astronaut and the AlienEvery older sibling knows that extraterrestrial life really does exist – parents bring the little aliens home from the hospital! Let your older astronaut show off that alien. Family Fun magazine’s website has directions for creating both costumes. For an even easier alien, purchase a green sweat suit or pajama set; use face paint to make your child’s face green; and place a headband decorated with an antenna in his or her hair. Racing CarsGive your children an outlet for their excess energy – and sibling rivalries – by turning them into race cars. When siblings’ ages vary greatly, the younger sibling may be too little to carry around a bulky cardboard box costume. Simply dress the younger child in a shiny sweat suit, strap on a headset and NASCAR-themed baseball cap, and he or she becomes the crew chief to the older child’s race car. The Fruit BowlThe fruit bowl costume is ideal for large families as it can accommodate any number of children. Grapes and other cluster fruits can be made by pinning balloons to a sweat suit. Oranges, apples, and other circular fruits can be fashioned from a sheet of fabric draped over a hula-hoop. If it is easier to purchase costumes, most catalogs and stores sell fruit-themed costumes for infants, toddlers, and children. A Hug and a KissHershey’s Kiss and Hug candies make a great pun-intended costume for twins or sweet little ones. Hershey’s website includes directions for making a Hershey’s Kiss costume. To create a Hug costume using the same directions, cut out several long strips of brown felt. Wrap and glue them around the silver of the Kiss costume. Monkey See and Monkey DoAre your children two of a kind? Do they follow each other around and build on one another’s ideas – both good and mischievous? Purchase or create two identical monkey costumes. Use sticky pre-cut felt letters to spell “Monkey See” on one costume and “Monkey Do” on the other. A Magician and a BunnyTake two classic Halloween characters and put them together for something unexpected. One child can be a magician and the other the bunny that gets pulled out of the magician’s hat. Be sure to remember that details make the difference – include a carrot for the bunny and a wand for the magician. With a little creativity, many more costume pairs can be created. Make sure that children know how their costumes relate and that they can explain it to adults passing out candy. They are sure to elicit oohs and aahs while trick-or-treating for a Halloween they will remember for years to come.
