On a budget this Halloween or tired of the typical "cookie-cutter" store-bought costumes? Then why not craft one of these whimsical handmade costumes?

Making a Halloween costume at home doesn't have to be difficult or expensive. With just a few supplies, it's simple to craft eye-catching costumes for the kids.

Pumpkin Costume

This simple and inexpensive pumpkin Halloween costume can be pulled together with just three items: a pumpkin lawn bag decoration, holiday garland and a festive hat or wig. To make this costume, cut a hole for the child's legs to fit through in the bottom of the pumpkin bag. (The bottom of the bag refers to the end with the seam.) Make sure the seams on the side of the bag remain intact. There will be one hole, so that the bottom is like a dress. Next cut a hole in each side at the top of the bag for the arms to go through.

Now it's time to dress up. A long black sleeve shirt and black pants work best underneath this costume. Help the child carefully step into the leg hole area of the pumpkin bag, and slide his/her arms through the arm holes. Put the final touches on the costume by draping the green garland around the child's neck like a scarf. Finish off the costume by wearing a festive hat or wig. Use face paint to color the kid's face orange like a real pumpkin. Really creative parents can use black face paint to make triangle eyes, a black nose and a silly mouth on their child's face too.

Messy Chef's Costume

Not the creative type? Then the Chef's costume is just what the doctor ordered. It doesn't get much easier than this. An apron, chef's hat, fake mustache and a little ketchup are all that's needed to craft this cute costume. To make this costume, dress the child in a black t-shirt and pants and then put on the apron and Chef's hat and affix the fake mustache to his/her face. Next, splatter a few drops of ketchup on the apron and rub in to create a "messy" look. And voila, the costume's complete.

Trash Bag Costume

This unique costume is not only easy to make, but is certain to draw a lot of attention too! A black trash bag, empty food packages and some super glue are all that's needed to make the trash bag costume. Start by cutting a slit in the bottom (seam side) of the trash bag for the child's legs to fit through so that the bottom of the trash bag essentially looks like the opening of a dress. Next, cut a small hole on each side of the bag for the arms to fit through.

Once the cutting is done, collect several empty food packages. Empty chip bags, mini cereal boxes, candy wrappers and other packages along that line work best. Glue the food packages to the trash bag. Once dry, it's time to get dressed. Carefully help the child step into the trash bag and put his/her arms through the arm holes. For the finishing touch, "mess up" the child's hair, using hair spray and gel as needed, and, if desired, us a bobby pin to clip a few candy wrappers to his/her hair. Some black or brown face makeup can also be smudged on the child's face to make it appear dirty too.

Making Halloween costumes at home is a fun family activity, and the result is sure to be a costume that's the talk of the neighborhood. Now that the Halloween costume has been taken care of, check out these other spooktacular Halloween games and activities.
