Celebrate Leap Year in 2008 with the following online projects for children that are fun, educational and free.
History of Leap Year
Centuries ago, the Roman calendar was commonly used. At that time, the Roman calendar consisted of 12 months which included 355 days.
Julius Caesar later established the Julian calendar which included 12 months and expanded the number of days each year to 365.25 days. This resulted in a 3-year-period with 365 days with the following year having 366 days. With the Julian calendar, all years divisible by four were considered Leap Years. Although the calendar was used until 1582, the Julian calendar was simply too long.
In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII instituted the Gregorian calendar. This modified calendar was created in order to coexist with the cycles of the seasons. The refined and adjusted Gregorian calendar added an extra day to occur every four years on February 29th, except for century years not divisible by 400. This rule omitted the three Leap Years every 400 years.
It takes the earth 365.25 days to orbit the sun, which is called a solar year. It is important the annual calendar matches the solar calendar so the seasons are in sync. Due to the refinement of the Gregorian calendar, our seasons occur during the same months every year.
