This article profiles two sources of free Memorial Day activities for children. Below are links to kids holiday activities – a poppy coloring page (a memorial symbol in the U.S.) plus online & printable Memorial Day word searches and free crossword puzzle worksheets.
Free Printable Memorial Day Activity for Children – Poppy Coloring Page
According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the red poppy is the official U.S. memorial flower. Because it is a symbol of remembrance, parents may wish to use poppy coloring pages to help kids learn about Memorial Day.
The Coloring Book Fun website offers a free printable poppy coloring page. To print this coloring page, click on the image to open up a separate window without ads. Then use the browser’s print function to print the coloring sheet. Alternatively, save the jpeg file to a personal computer for printing at a later date. The default printing option should be to fill an 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper.

Memorial Day Word Search Worksheets for Kids – Printable Plus Online Versions
The U.S. Memorial Day website offers many worksheets for children to enjoy. The site’s largest worksheet collection is of Memorial Day word searches. There are three different printable word search worksheets with solutions. Difficulty levels range from easy to hard; the primary difference among the difficulty levels is how many words need to be found.
Two other word searches can be completed electronically with a Java applet. To work these online puzzles, select the letters that form one of the hidden words by dragging the cursor over all the letters in the word, then release the mouse button. If a word has been correctly identified, the word will be circled in blue, then the word will disappear from the word list on the right. Users have the ability to ask the program for help by clicking on a word, then the “Find Words” button. To start over with a completely rearranged grid, click on “Rescramble.”
Easy & Medium Difficulty Printable Memorial Day Holiday Crossword Puzzles for Children
The U.S. Memorial Day website (see link above) also contains printable Memorial Day crossword puzzles for kids that come in two versions – easy and medium. The easier version only has ten words to guess. The clues are very easy, such as “the month Memorial Day falls” and “the opposite of peace is.” Any child with cursory knowledge about this U.S. holiday should be able to complete this worksheet.
The medium difficulty crossword puzzle contains fifteen word clues. This puzzle doesn’t seem much more difficult that the easy version, except that it contains more words; many of the clues are the same. A link to the solution is posted below both kids holiday crossword puzzles.

The poppy coloring sheet, word search, and crossword puzzle activities discussed above are appropriate for children of all ages, although they are probably most challenging to children ages four through ten.
