These handmade presents are fun activities for young children that Pre-K teachers or parents can help kids make for their Mom, Dad or other loved one.

Sometimes the best gift a child can give is a one-of-a-kind present the toddler created himself. What parent doesn't love to see their child exploring new creative outlets that provide them with a long-lasting momento as well? Here are some special crafts for preschoolers and young children to do.

Plaster of Paris Handprints

A classic personalized gift that children have been giving their parents for years, a plaster handprint is a great present for Mother's Day or Father's Day. This craft will require a grown-ups help to create.

  • Measure the plaster into a disposable container and add dry tempera to create individualized colors. Pink, blue or other pastels are especially beautiful.
  • Add water to the preferred thickness (follow package directions) and pour into a 9" pie plate at least 1 1/2" thick for best results.
  • Tap and shake the pie plate to help the plaster settle properly.
  • When the bottom of the pie plate feels warm, it is time to help the toddler make the handprint. This may take more than one try but try to work quickly since plaster begins to set quickly.
  • Allow the plaster to harden overnight!

Put on a Mother's Day Concert and Serenade Mom!

It is easy to teach toddlers a special "Mother's Day Song" by using a familiar tune. Have the children sing to their mothers for a serenade those Moms will never forget. For example, turn "Happy Birthday" into a "Happy Mother's Day" song. Or create a new one - like this song you can help preschoolers sing to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb".

  • "My Mommy is so good to me/ good to me/ good to me"
  • My Mommy is so good to me, that's why I love her so."

Create a Mommy Poster or Card Using Her Name or "Mommy"

Use the letters of her name, or just the word MOMMY to create a character poster telling all the reasons the child loves her Mommy or things that make her special. Use these ABC character ideas to get you started or let the child tell you reasons her Mommy is awesome, such as:

  • M - Many Kisses
  • O - Open Hearted
  • M - Mighty Mom
  • M - Makes Me Cookies
  • Y - Yummy Dinners and Snacks
