Santa Claus is Coming to Town is a favorite Christmas song of many children and adults. Here are the lyrics for families to sing along this Christmas season.

"Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is a favorite Christmas Carol of many children. It fills children with the hope and excitement of Santa Claus coming on Christmas Eve to deliver toys and presents. But like the song suggests, Santa only brings presents to children who have been good all year long.

For this reason, parents like the song because it teaches children to be good as Santa Claus is watching. He can see when they are being good or bad, even when they're sleeping. Children will learn that they have to be good to get presents from Santa. Otherwise, they may end up with lumps of coal in their stockings!

The carol also introduces the infamous list that Santa makes with the names of all the boys and girls in the world. It teaches children that each year, Santa will make note of whether each boy or girl has been naughty or nice. And then he will check the list twice to make sure he has it right.

History of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" Christmas Carol

According to Christmas-Lyrics.org, "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" was written by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie. It was first sung in November of 1934 on Eddie Cantor's radio show. Instantly the song became a huge hit and they received orders for 100,000 copies of sheet music the very next day. By Christmas, over 400,000 copies of sheet music were sold. This delightful Christmas carol was only outsold by two other songs: "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "White Christmas".

There are two reasons this song was met with such huge success. The first is the opening-line warning, "You better watch out". It grabs the attention of the listener immediately. The second is the promise it offers of Santa Claus coming to town, which is a ray of sunshine during the times of depression. These two elements are wrapped up in catchy lyrics and melody.

The carol was later adapted into a lovable and still popular film version in 1970, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, directed by Rankin/Bass. It tells the story of how Santa Claus became who he is today and why he gives out presents to all the boys and girls.
