Celebrate May and June and motivate young writers with writing ideas related to May Day, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, End of the School Year, Friends, and Summer Vacation
Spring is in full swing and summer is peeking around the corner! It's time to enjoy some fun writing activities for kids and celebrate all of the great moments that make up this magical time of year!
May Day Baskets
Now is a great time to revive the old custom of making May Day baskets! Create or purchase small baskets and fill with flowers. Attach a small card to the basket explaining the history of May Day and why that person is being blessed with a May Day basket. Then secretly leave in on someone’s door handle.
Memory Flag
Draw or copy an outline of the American flag on a letter sized piece of paper. Color as appropriate. In each of the stripes, write one blessing or freedom we have because some made the ultimate sacrifice and died for the USA. Display as a reminder of what a great thing it is to live in the United States of America and to honor those who greatly deserve it.
Summer Fun Idea Book
Brainstorm 101 ideas for summer fun! Start with small groups of students and have them brainstorm at least fifteen to twenty fun summer activities, with the focus on those that are free and don’t require adult leadership. Each group shares their ideas with the class and the teacher makes a list on the board or overhead. Each student copies the entire list into their own special Summer Fun Idea Book to take home for the summer. If time is short, the teacher can type up the list and make copies. The students can then decorate a cover for the book.
