St. Patrick's Day Activities for Kids

Leprechaun Surprises Make St. Patty's Day Fun for Children

Feb 6, 2009 Julie Pirkle

Kids will be thrilled to find that mischievous leprechauns have run amuck in their house on St. Patrick's Day, leaving behind a slew of delightful surprises.

St. Patrick's Day, typically celebrated on March 17, originated in Ireland to celebrate the patron saint and Irish heritage. The holiday was traditionally celebrated with a large religious feast. Today, St. Patrick's Day is celebrated by people all over the world and of all different backgrounds, and has most notably come to be associated with wearing green and mischief-making leprechauns.

Put your kids in the holiday spirit this St. Paddy's day by turning some sneaky leprechauns loose in your own home. Armed with some green food coloring and chocolate coins, it's both fun and easy to help some rambunctious leprechauns make their presence known this March 17.

Turn the Water Green

The color green has long been associated with St. Patrick's Day, and it's common knowledge that leprechauns love this color. Use a few drops of green food coloring to turn your toilet water green on St. Patty's eve. When your kids wake in the morning, they will excited to discover that the leprechauns have turned the water green in celebration of the holiday. And not to worry, it's perfectly safe to use food coloring in the toilet bowl. It won't stain.

"Shake Things Up" and Leave a Trail of Chocolate Coins

They don't call them mischievous for nothing. Leprechauns are known for causing trouble. Once your kids are safely tucked in their beds on St. Patrick's eve, it's time for the silly leprechauns to go to work. Tip over a kitchen chair or two, toss a few couch cushions on the floor, turn pictures hanging on the wall upside down, jumble up toys in your kids room and whatever else you can think of to showcase the leprechauns whimsical nature.

Don't forget to leave a trail of chocolate coins for your child to discover wherever the leprechauns have caused a stir. Kids will be thrilled when they awake in the morning and find that leprechauns have visited their house while they were sleeping.

Serve Green Food and Drinks

In addition to serving naturally green foods like apples, pickles, grapes and mint ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it's fun to present your kids with foods they don't expect to be green in honor of the St. Patrick's Day holiday. Grab the food coloring and let your imagination run wild to delight of your kids. A few drops of green food coloring will turn milk, water, mayonnaise, eggs and homemade baked goods St. Paddy's Day green. Kids will relish the novelty of eating these unusually green foods.

More Easy Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

  • Wear green, of course. Wear festive hats, buttons, etc. designed especially for the holiday.
  • Revive the tradition of pinching friends and family members who don't wear green on St. Patrick's Day. Be gentle please!
  • Decorate your home with St. Patrick's Day decorations, easily found at your local Wal-Mart or party store.
  • Serve a meal of corned beef and cabbage.
  • Play Celtic, folk or other traditional Irish music.

Once leprechauns invade your home with their mischievous tricks, chocolate coins and green treats, be prepared for your kids to look forward to this tradition every St. Patrick's Day holiday. Holiday fun is a fantastic way to create childhood memories that your children will treasure year after year.
