Halloween is extended throughout October with the fun, new Boo Halloween tradition. Neighbors treat neighbors and friends in a fun twist on the sneaky May Day custom.

Booing is mysteriously dropping a special treat at the home of a friend.

How to Boo A Friend or Neighbor

Choose a decorated bag, or decorate one with Halloween or fall decor. Every Boo bag must include a sign that the recipient can hang in the window or door to let everyone know they’ve already been Boo’d. The bags should also include a Halloween Boo poem. These notes explain to the recipients that they

  • Have been Boo’d
  • Are to choose a friend or two to Boo
  • Need to include treats, notes and a sign in each bag
  • Should be sneaky when leaving it at their friends’ doors.

How to Decorate Reusable Boo Containers

On her website, Skip To My Lou, Cindy Louh recommends delivering the Boo treats in a reusable container and attaching a sturdy note. This way, each Boo recipient can simply refill the container and pass it along to the next friend.

Choose a sturdy container from a local craft store, dollar store or Wal-Mart. Most places will have a container that can be used as is. However, the crafty person can add to any container to make it even more festive.

  • Choose a cute trick or treat pumpkin and add a “costume“. Cindy Louh has a cute example of such a pumpkin that has been decorated with a cat mask.
  • Decorate the handle of a basket with fall foliage and line the bottom with a fall or Halloween decorated hand towel.
  • Get an unused paint can. In her article, "Paint Can Cubbies," from the Martha Stewart Living website, Martha Stewart recommends purchasing these at paint stores (site accessed on October 18, 2008). Decorate the paint can using craft paper or contact paper and other materials. For example, find an orange craft paper. Cut it to fit around the paint can and glue it in place. Use black paper or foam for pumpkin eyes, nose and mouth. Cut these out and glue on the face to make a pumpkin container.

Once the reusable container is made, find a sturdy, festive card stock on which to print the Boo poem. Attach it to the container with black and orange ribbon. Now, all the next Boo recipient needs to do is create a Boo sign and re-fill the container for their own “victims.”

Treats Ideas for Boo Bags

Try to include treats based on the friend who will be receiving the boo bag. Examples of fun items to include:

  • Candy corn
  • Chocolates
  • Packaged caramel apples
  • Popcorn balls
  • Suckers or other sweets
  • Small bags of popcorn
  • Glow sticks
  • Flash lights
  • Silly string
  • Play dough
  • Card games
  • Fall stationary
  • Small fall scented candles

Booing is a wonderful, neigborly, Halloween tradition. A simple bag or crafted container filled with personalized treats is sure to delight neighbors, bringing them together in this sneaky fall festive game.
