Most everyone is familiar with National holidays, such as Christmas, Valentine's Day, and others. Some people even know about Teacher Appreciation Day and Children's Day. But, do you know about some of the weird or unusual holidays that we celebrate in America? Take a look here. Each holiday has one idea of how to celebrate it. Mark your calendars!
Book Blitz Month: Hold a family contest to see who can read the most books this month. Of course, you will want to make the books age-appropriate. Younger children can read picture books or have their books read to them.
National Bird Feeding Month: Make a birdhouse with a kit or make your own with these simple instructions:
Layer a clean toilet paper tube with peanut. Roll the tube in bird seed. Add little treats by sticking them into the peanut butter. Hole punch two holes on opposite sides near the top of the bird feeder. Thread some string through the holes and tie in a knot. Go outside and hang your bird feeder on a tree branch.
National Craft Month: This is the month to make crafts as a family and give them to others. For instance, you can make centerpieces for tables at an assisted-living center. There are lots of things you can do this month!
Community Spirit Days Month: Organize a block party or huge community yard sale. Do something with your neighbor, or visit a shut-in neighbor that does not get out too much. Offer to run errands for others.
Family Wellness Month: Work as a family to eat using the Food Pyramid as your guide. Make meals and snacks that fall within the recommendations of the chart.
Sports America Kids Month: Take a 30-minute family walk every day after dinner, when the sun is not so hot, this month. Get out and exercise with your family and practice new skills, such as dribbling, kicking a soccer ball, or teach your son to throw a football.
Family Reunion Month: Connect with family that you have not seen in years. Plan a family reunion, and get plenty of help from other family members. Pick a spot that might be reasonable for every to drive about the same distance.
Happiness Happens Month: Create greeting cards and send them to relatives and friends just to put a smile on their face. Slip secret "I Love You" notes under your kids pillows while they are sleeping at night.
Library Card Sign-Up Month: Make sure every member of your house has a library card. Go to the library and check out books. Teach your children about the Dewey Decimal System! Have a librarian show your child where books are located.
National Roller Skating Month: Teach your child how to roller skate. Most rinks offer a family night and discounts for large groups. Take some friends and get rolling!
I Am So Thankful Month: At each mealtime, have everyone at the table tell something they are thankful that day.
Learn a Foreign Language Month: Do you know what "La Familia" means in Spanish? It means family. Have your family learn a new language together this month. Just do the basics like numbers and colors, and younger children can join in the fun, too!
Every month has a reason to celebrate. Enjoy your family time together!
